Shalini Dewan: Employee Spotlight

Updated: Jun 3

Today’s Employee Spotlight is on Shalini Dewan, our Associate Director, Medical Writing. Read our Q&A with her below!

Where are you from?

I am from New Delhi, India, and moved to the USA 23 years ago. I have lived in California since then.

How long have you worked at Synterex?

I joined Synterex at the end of April 2022, so 6 months to be exact.

What is your favorite thing about the company?

I like my co-workers. Although everyone works remotely but is still involved with each other, it doesn’t seem that we are in a virtual environment.

How did you end up in medical writing?

I did my Bachelor’s in Pharmacy and then a Master’s in Pharmaceutical Chemistry in India, intending to work on the research side and in a lab. I did work in analytical labs for about 3 years, and then my son was born. It became challenging to maintain a family life balance with work while my son was a baby. I switched to writing then, as it was more of a 9-5 job, but I enjoyed doing that and have since continued.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy process development and improvement in medical writing the most. I ran my own company for 12 years and have always enjoyed building up new processes and algorithms, which probably leads to it.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

I have 100+ publications in market research which I am proud of. I am also proud that I have developed good relationships with the people I work with. And academically, I am proud of my achievements in the past and present. I was awarded a gold medal by the then-prime minister of India in my Master’s program. I am pursuing my doctoral program (halfway through), and I have achieved the President’s Award every quarter.

What are some of the hobbies/interests you’re most passionate about?

I love singing Indian music and helping in our family-owned business of preschools, as I love being around children. I also love organizing events, sometimes for fun and sometimes for charity.
